Whoever said life begins at forty wasn’t wrong. But instead of all your troubles disappearing and you feeling carefree and able to enjoy life to the full, if anything, this is when the ‘trouble’ starts.
Well, that’s to say, it’s usually as we hit mid-life that we hold the mirror up and decide we’re not over the moon with what’s reflected back.
There’s the usual pressure to be ‘successful’ – the material stuff around earning a good living, having a nice car, owning the latest tech etc. But there’s also something much more fundamental. A belief that we should be happy.
Yep, we know that sounds vague and wishy-washy but ask most people what they want and 9 times out of ten that’s what they’ll say. Quickly followed by a heap other stuff in a bid to cover up, just in case they’ve exposed the fact they’re not happy now.
Probe a little deeper and ask someone what happiness means to them and they’ll either talk about fleeting moments of joy, like travelling or a hobby or admit they don’t know.
Taking a long hard look at your life often leads to feeling like you’re at a cross-roads. Not sure which way to go next. There’s a nagging feeling that things could be better. Your kids are becoming more independent or have left home and you feel they don’t need you as much, leaving a hole. Your job has become same-same and no longer fills you with excitement. Your relationship with your partner feels a bit stale and there are fewer fun times. You’re tired of running around after everybody else. You’re fed up with feeling judged and criticised by one or both of your parents. You’re sick of that voice in your head that puts you down, compares you to others and generally seems to have it in for you. You feel it’s time for you now.
But how do you identify why you’re feeling this way? Let alone know what to do to change it. And even if you do know, it all feels scary and unachievable. Oh, and to admit you’re feeling this way… Er no! That makes you feel way too wobbly.
So, the natural reaction is then talk yourself out of doing anything. Comfortable in your discomfort. Most likely becoming a little more irritable and short-tempered as time goes on. Okay, maybe we need to reign it in a bit, as we’re being a tad unfair here, but the point is, you can do something about all this.
